Through her design, she documents how textile scraps can be recycled into raw material for new production. According to business estimates, the fashion industry ends up discarding almost as much as it produces. Since graduating from Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan in 2009, Erga has specialised in creating wallpaper and -décor from textile scraps. Her sustainable magnetic wallpaper, which draws on production surplus from well-known Norwegian fashion designer Leila Hafzi, constituted the foundation for her MA exhibition at Chelsea College of Art and Design last year. The Zero-Waste Wallpaper is a magnetic wallpaper made by recycling waste from the fashion and textile industry. Norwegian fashion designer Leila Hafzi, who won Designer of the Year in Norway in 1997 is supporting the design by supplying the textile waste from her production. By adapting and modificating traditional papermaking methods, the textile waste is used to make a new material. This is pressed, embellished and lasercut to create walldecoration for interiors. The idea of the wallpaper is to bring the exterior into the interior by using nature as inspiration. The fabric sheets created by recycling the waste are used to design various textures for magnetic wallpaper “tiles”. The decorated tiles can be attached to the wall by coating it with a layer of magnetic ink (which can be recoated in any preferred colour). The idea of such magnetic puzzle-shaped tiles is that one can piece together and customise ones’s own interactive wallpaper.
